Since late 2014 to the present, El Nino has affected Vietnam that causing temperatures to rise, shortage of rainfall and this is the cause of drought, saltwater intrusion that causing heavy damage and continuing serious threat to production and people's life. Mekong Delta, South Central, Central Highlands and the South East region has been most affected. According to the forecasts, El Nino is becoming the longest El Niño recorded in Vietnam that may continue to impact and last until mid-2016.

     Many systems of irrigation, salinity prevention dike was more interested and have been built to control saltwater intrusion in the region such as Quan Lo-Phung Hiep, Long Xuyen quadrangle, O Mon-Xa No, Nam Mang Thit , Go Cong Bao Dinh ...

     In conditions not too detrimental, these works have promoted their high efficiency, contributed to saltwater intrusion control in the last years. With the current situation that saltwater intrusion ongoing fierce, these works have also contributed significantly to minimize the losses. However, many fields of the economy and livelihoods of 9/13 provinces and cities in region (Long An, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Kien Giang, Ca Mau and Hau Giang) have been seriously affected.
